Scott Jones, the winningest coach in the 42-year history of the Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) football program, retired as both the school's head football coach and athletic director Wednesday morning to take an assistant coaching, teaching and administrative position at Ben Lippen Christian School in Columbia.

People cope with the loss of a loved one in different ways. A Lugoff woman whose 10-year-old daughter died suddenly in October 2011 following an asthma attack channeled her grief into writing a book. Melissa Stover said she always had an interest in writing, but the passing of her daughter, Carissa, inspired her to pen the children's book, "Monkeys Taste Like Chocolate."

Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS)'s Able Club will host a Race to the Press Box 5K Run/Walk event Saturday at 8 a.m. The event will benefit the L-EHS Able Club Scholarship Fund which presents a scholarship in honor of Rob Evans and Joey Dorton. Evans served as a school resource officer for several Kershaw County schools; Dorton as chair of the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees. Both Evans and Dorton passed away last year and the race is aimed at honoring them and their contributions to Kershaw County schools.

Millions of mothers across the Unites States and the world were recognized Sunday for their contributions to their families and to society as a whole. But one Lugoff mother and grandmother had three extra reasons to celebrate this Mother's Day weekend. Mary Schneck had three grandchildren graduate from three separate universities, one Friday and two Saturday.

Saturday night, Lugoff-Elgin High School hosted its annual Mr. L-E contest. Eighteen students competed for the title. Winners were Mr. Congeniality, Austin Branham; 1st Runner Up, Dakota Jones; Mr. L-E 2014, Gunnar Branham; Jr. Mr. L-E 2014, Gunnar Catoe. Whitney Clendening was voted as Ms. Sweetheart.

Tammy Bridges, an employee at a daycare center, received the Elgin Police Department (EPD) Chief's Award during a special Wednesday night Elgin Town Council meeting. EPD Chief Harold Brown and council recognized Bridges for assisting two young boys during February's winter storm.

For the month of January, the Pine Grove Baptist Church AWANA youth ministry conducted a canned and non-perishable food drive for a monthly mission project supported by members of the church. January was titled as "Can-Do Anything" month based on the scripture Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me." With a goal of 1000 food items for the project, AWANA clubbers and church members brought in more than 1700 items of food. Lugoff-Elgin High School held it's 38th annual Miss L-EHS pageant January 25. Nineteen girls competed for the title of Junior Miss L-EHS. The Jr. Miss L-EHS finalists are as follows: Miss Congenialty was awarded to Ashland Motley, First Runner Up was awarded to Savannah Harvey, Miss Freshman 2014 was awarded to Leah Hunter, Junior Miss L-EHS 2014 was awarded to Tory Branham; Miss Sophomore 2014 was awarded to Rylee Mathis, Second Runner Up was awarded to Hannah Bradley and Miss Photogentic was awarded to Ashlynn Russo.
