Meeting to address Twenty-File Mile Creek health

Just how healthy the Twenty-Five Mile Creek watershed is will be the subject of a public meeting to be held Wednesday at Elgin Town Hall at 6 p.m. Kershaw County and consulting firm AMEC Environment & Infrastructure, will present plans to improve environmental issues in the creek's watershed.

Special election June 18 for Ernst's seat

A special election resolution was passed to fill Norman Ernst's vacated seat at Tuesday night's Elgin Town Council meeting. Candidate applications will be accepted beginning today at noon at the Kershaw County voter registration office, until noon on April 19. Candidates will also have to electronically submit a statement of economic interest through the State Ethics Commission. The special election will be held on June 18 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Elgin Town Hall.

Ernst resigns from council after arrest

Norman Allen "Bubba" Ernst tendered his resignation from Elgin Town Council Friday after being arrested Tuesday on criminal domestic violence charges. Elgin Mayor Brad Hanely said he received Ernst's letter Friday afternoon. The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) and the Elgin Police Department (EPD) charged Ernst with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature. The charges stem from a series of incidents that took place Saturday and Sunday both in and outside the town of Elgin.

Sloan, Smith sworn in to Elgin Town Council

Dana Sloan and Ed Smith Jr. took their oaths of office, sworn in to Elgin Town Council by Mayor Brad Hanley during council's meeting Tuesday night. This is the first time that two women, Sloan and Councilwoman Melissa Emmons, are serving on council simultaneously.

L-EWA approves clearwell repair project during meeting

The Lugoff-Elgin Water Authority (L-EWA) board unanimously approved a $150,192 repair project at the authority's water treatment plant during its meeting Thursday. The project calls for improvements to a leaking clearwell tank, which would involve repairs of pits and holes, sandblasting, and recoating the tank inside and out.

Smith, Sloan are new Elgin council members

Ed Smith and Dana Sloan are the newest members of Elgin Town Council following an election Tuesday. Smith automatically won his seat, recently vacated by Larry Risvold, by virtue of being the only person officially on the ballot. Sloan, who missed the official candidate registration period, ran as a write-in candidate for the seat most recently held by Roger Ross, who decided not to seek reelection.

L-EWA approves early bond arrangements

The Lugoff-Elgin Water Authority (L-EWA) Board unanimously voted Dec. 6 to give L-EWA General Manager Mike Hancock the authority to arrange the details of paying off two bonds totaling approximately $2.9 million. Hancock said the bonds would not be eligible for repayment until May 2013, but noted the L-EWA needed to approve the proposal in order to begin preliminary work.

Santa Rides Through Lugoff

The Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) will have the honor of escorting Santa Claus through the neighborhoods of Lugoff this year. The LFD will escort Santa through different areas of the Lugoff Community each night, today and Tuesday, and Thursday and Friday. Several Lugoff residents asked that this event return to the community so children can have the opportunity to see the "Jolly One" before he comes on Christmas Night.

Elgin audit receives unqualified opinion

The town of Elgin's latest audit came back with an unqualified opinion, meaning auditors had no reservations in reviewing the town's finances. A representative from the certified public accounting firm of Dooley and Company LLC presented the audit at Tuesday's Elgin Town Council meeting.

Lights of Lugoff parade Saturday

The fifth annual "Lights of Lugoff" Christmas parade will begin Saturday at 6:30 p.m. on U.S. 1 in Lugoff. The 2012 parade is sponsored by the Lugoff Optimist Club and local businesses. The parade route will begin at the BP Station in Lugoff, travel down U.S. 1 South, and then turn right on to S.C. 34 (Ridgeway Road). All spectators are asked to remain around U.S. 1 for the parade.
