On Friday, Jan. 27, the parents of a 3-year-old Lugoff boy pulled from the bottom of a pool four days earlier were told their son might not ever wake up. During the next seven days, that boy not only woke up, but became more and more responsive and able to support himself while standing at least once.
Cassatt Water has received a $500,000 grant from the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority that will be used to upgrade the Red Hill elevated tank located off of Red Hill Church Road in Cassatt.
Lugoff's Carolina Family Karate has been invited to send eight of its students to train at the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center February 16-20. The students, all black belts and on the CFK's competition team, will have the opportunity to train with Tokey Hill, the first American to win the World Karate Federation Traditional World Karate title.
Elgin Town Council passed a motion to fund the construction of a walking trail for Potter Community Park during its November meeting. It was also motioned that council look into approving the purchase of an office finance module after the first of the year.
Elgin Town Council voted to purchase eight Christmas light decorations for Potter Community Park. The Potter Community Park committee met Aug. 25 and decided to request council to approve the purchase. The snowflake decorations will be installed on the new park lights in Potter Community Park.
The Elgin Wellness Committee wants more of the town's employees, police officers and residents to get fit by participating in its wellness program. To do that, the committee is in the process of creating a new charity walk/run event to take place this fall in the town limits.
The West Wateree-Lugoff Rotary Club recently awarded its annual scholarships to five Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) seniors for outstanding accomplishments both inside and outside the classroom. Each student received $1,000 and spoke at a recent club meeting about their college plans. Since 1990, the club has awarded 110 scholarships to L-EHS seniors totaling $70,000, all raised by club members. The Elgin Police Department (EPD) is the recipient of more than $736,000 of money recovered by a federal government task force. EPD Chief Harold Brown made the announcement during Elgin Town Council's April 12 meeting. Brown said EPD Officer Rene Wilson assisted the task force, which seized approximately $7.5 million from criminal activity.
Elgin Town Council recognized Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) Valedictorian Hannah Potter at March 1 meeting. Potter's list of achievements includes receiving a Congressional nomination to West Point from Congressman Mick Mulvaney and receiving Congressional nominations to the Merchant Marine Academy and Air Force Academy from U.S. Senator Tim Scott. Potter has also been accepted into The Citadel, USC Honors College and The Calhoun Honors College at Clemson.
