Melissa Emmons sworn in as Elgin Mayor

Melissa Emmons is now, officially, the mayor of Elgin. Emmons, who finished her second term as a town council member, took the oath of office during Elgin Town Council's meeting Tuesday night before a full house. Councilwoman Candy Silvers retook her oath of office Tuesday, while the former mayor, Brad Hanley, took the oath as a regular council member.

Melissa Brazell Emmons elected as Elgin mayor

Melissa Emmons is Elgin's new mayor, elected Tuesday as part of elections for Elgin Town Council. Emmons, who most recently served as council's mayor pro tem, received 107 votes while her opponent, Silas Silvers, received 40 votes. Former Elgin Mayor Brad Hanley received 105 votes, earning him a "regular" seat on council, and current council woman Candice "Candy" Silvers received 80 to be reelected. Silas Silvers, who also ran for a council seat, received 45 votes in that race.

Elgin’s Potter Park to host Cars 2 Dreams car show

Classic collectible hotrod cars and trucks will be on display when Elgin's Potter Community Parks hosts the sixth annual Cars 2 Dreams car show March 14. The show, featuring classic vehicles from various car clubs and individuals from throughout South Carolina, is sponsored by the Jamil Shrine Temple and O'Reilly Auto Parts. Proceeds will benefit the Shrine's Children Hospital of Greenville. The 2014 show raised approximately $3,000.

Elgin council approves library porch enclosure

An outdoor porch on the side of the Kershaw County Library's (KCL) Elgin branch will be enclosed soon. Elgin Town Council voted to approve the construction during its first meeting of 2015 on Tuesday night.

LF-R to give Santa a lift through town

Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) will escort Santa Claus through the neighborhoods of Lugoff again this year. Santa will go through different areas of the Lugoff community each night. LF-R Chief Dennis Ray said firefighters enjoy this event each year so children can have the opportunity to see the "Jolly One" before he comes on Christmas Eve.

Hanley not running for reelection as Elgin’s mayor

Elgin Mayor Brad Hanley will not run for reelection in February. Hanley, elected four years ago in 2011, said he is still considering a run for a regular council seat in order to continue his public service. He said he would make a decision in the coming weeks.

Elgin Town Council elections to be held in February

Elgin voters will have the chance to vote for mayor and two positions on Elgin Town Council on Feb. 3, 2015. The official announcement for February's election came during council's Nov. 4 meeting. Those interested in running must register at Elgin Town Hall between Dec. 5 and 19. Candidates must be an Elgin resident to run for office.

The Blaney-Elgin Museum & Historical Society begins wreath sales for veteran’s graves

The Blaney-Elgin Museum & Historical Society are selling Christmas wreaths through Wreaths Across America for the Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The placing of wreaths on veteran's graves are a great tribute to the men and women who have given so much for the freedom enjoyed each day. This year, the Fort Jackson Cemetery needs 3,500 wreaths to cover each veteran's graves. The Wreath Laying Cemetery will be held at the cemetery on December 13, 2014, at 12 Noon.
