New walk/run event coming to Elgin this fall

The Elgin Wellness Committee wants more of the town's employees, police officers and residents to get fit by participating in its wellness program. To do that, the committee is in the process of creating a new charity walk/run event to take place this fall in the town limits.

Rotary scholars

The West Wateree-Lugoff Rotary Club recently awarded its annual scholarships to five Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) seniors for outstanding accomplishments both inside and outside the classroom. Each student received $1,000 and spoke at a recent club meeting about their college plans. Since 1990, the club has awarded 110 scholarships to L-EHS seniors totaling $70,000, all raised by club members. EPD granted more than $700,000 of seizure money

The Elgin Police Department (EPD) is the recipient of more than $736,000 of money recovered by a federal government task force. EPD Chief Harold Brown made the announcement during Elgin Town Council's April 12 meeting. Brown said EPD Officer Rene Wilson assisted the task force, which seized approximately $7.5 million from criminal activity.

L-EHS valedictorian honored by Elgin Town Council

Elgin Town Council recognized Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) Valedictorian Hannah Potter at March 1 meeting. Potter's list of achievements includes receiving a Congressional nomination to West Point from Congressman Mick Mulvaney and receiving Congressional nominations to the Merchant Marine Academy and Air Force Academy from U.S. Senator Tim Scott. Potter has also been accepted into The Citadel, USC Honors College and The Calhoun Honors College at Clemson.

Elgin council discusses possible change in FOIA fees

The town of Elgin may change the way it charges for S.C. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. Elgin Town Council discussed updating FOIA processing fees during its Jan. 5 meeting. Councilwoman Dana Sloan reported on a possible change in state law which could affect what municipalities can charge for a FOIA request.

Elgin to host Community Friendship Fiesta

Next spring, the town of Elgin will host The ALPHA Center's annual Community Friendship Fiesta, a community picnic celebrating Hispanic culture and multiculturalism. The tentative date of the event will be Saturday, April 6 at Potter Community Park from 4 to 7 p.m.

ETC amends Elgin Citizen of the Year procedures

On a 3-2 vote, Elgin Town Council voted to amend procedures for the town's Citizen of the Year award during its Nov. 3 meeting. The amended procedures now include making sitting council members ineligible to win the award. The revised procedure will go into effect this year.

Elgin gets update on flood recovery efforts

Elgin suffered much of the effects of this past weekend's heavy rains. Like the rest of the county, Elgin is in recovery mode, and Elgin Town Council received an update from Kershaw County officials during its meeting Tuesday evening.

‘No error’ in Elgin zoning ordinance, says administrator

Randy Pruitt, Elgin's zoning administrator, said the town made no error when it created zoning ordinance sections pertaining to non-conforming uses in Elgin's overlay district.
