Kathy Brown named Elgin Citizen of the Year

Kathy Brown is the 2013 Elgin Citizen of the Year. The town named Brown its citizen of the year at its Christmas Dinner held the weekend of Nov. 23. Her closest friends and family managed to keep it from her until the moment it was announced at the dinner.

Lugoff Fire crews teach Fire Prevention

During the National Fire Prevention Week last month, firefighters from the Lugoff Fire Department visited the Lugoff Schools to promote fire and life safety initiatives to children and adults. The national fire prevention campaign for 2013 is "Prevent Kitchen Fires: Get Cooking with Fire Safety." Firefighters spoke with Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First-Grade classes at Lugoff and Wateree Elementary Schools during the week.

Section of I-20 dedicated to Elgin’s Chris Potter

The Elgin community gathered at Highway Pentecostal Holiness Church in Elgin Wednesday to dedicatea section of I-20 to a Kershaw County Sheriff's Office deputy killed in the line of duty in 1974. Police officers, state and local representatives and more joined members of the late Deputy Chris Potter III's family to honor him.

The Sixth Annual "Lights of Lugoff" 2013 Christmas parade will begin Saturday, Dec. 14 at 6:30 p.m. on U.S. 1 in Lugoff.

Radiate Church reaches out to Elgin

Radiate Church is just a little more than two years old but is already making a positive difference in its community. The church, which meets at Killian Elementary in Richland County, recently wrapped up its Cover Columbia campaign where members exceeded a goal of 200 community service hours with a total of 464 hours. Some of those hours were spent at Elgin's branch of the Kershaw County Library and Grooms Garden in Kershaw County.

Elgin accepting Citizen of the Year nominations

The town of Elgin will honor its Citizen of the Year at Elgin's Holiday dinner on Nov. 24, recognizing the winner's significant service to the community. A selection committee is currently accepting nominations for individuals who have contributed outstanding public service to the town of Elgin and/or the Elgin Community. Nomination forms for Elgin's Citizen of the Year can be picked up and submitted at Elgin Town Hall. The deadline is Monday. Nomination forms can also be mailed to Citizen of the Year c/o The Town of Elgin, P.O. Box 277, Elgin, SC 29045.

Elgin Museum selling wreaths for veterans’ graves

The Blaney-Elgin Museum and Historical Society is currently selling wreaths with Wreaths Across America to place on the graves of veterans at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. A single wreath costs $15 with $5 going to the Blaney-Elgin Museum.

Elgin moves forward on Potter Park shelter

Elgin Town Council continues to move forward with plans to build a community picnic shelter at Potter Community Park. Councilwoman Dana Sloan, who is serving as chairwoman of the Potter Community Park Committee, reported that the committee met with a builder who suggested that the proposed location of the shelter be slightly moved to lessen potential traffic noise from U.S. 1.

Elgin moving forward with Potter Park stage

Elgin Town Council is moving forward with plans to build a structure on Potter Community Park, located at the corner of Green Hill Road and Main Street in Elgin. The structure would function as a stage and shelter.

County, Elgin team up to keep waters clean

Clean water is something that can easily be taken for granted, however there are government programs in place to help enforce practices to ensure that the water supply stays clean and uncontaminated. The Kershaw County Stormwater Management program, however, aims to significantly reduce water pollutants that enter local streams, lakes and other bodies of water.

Heavy rain causes portion of Wildwood Lane to collapse

Law enforcement blocked off a portion of Wildwood Lane behind Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) after a catch basin and a piece of the roadway collapsed Monday morning. As of Tuesday afternoon, the portion of the road -- between Richardson Boulevard and Magnolia Lane -- was still blocked off. Officials from the S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT) said heavy rain caused the collapse. SCDOT Assistant Resident Maintenance Engineer Brian Motley said the road may reopen Thursday afternoon, depending on the weather.
