Summer sports camps are plentiful in Kershaw County

With the school year coming to a close, it is time for summer sports camps in Kershaw County.
Here is a listing of the camps, by starting date:

Horse Riding Camp or Lessons: Summer horse camp sessions or lessons are available through the Recreation Department. Linda Klein is the instructor. There are also all levels of classes offered for those who would like to take group or individual lessons. These classes meet one day a week for four weeks and the cost is $100. Participants will become acquainted with the horse through grooming, tacking, and leading in the first level, working their way steadily towards jumping, horse show etiquette, conformation and rules of the show ring in higher levels.

Camp dates: (Beginners) each week beginning May 29 through Aug. 1  (Advanced) week of June 9 -13
Hours:  8:30 a.m. - noon
Location: Voxton Farm in  Camden
Cost: $150                                                                                                           
Ages: 6 - 18
Registration: One week in advance through the Kershaw County Recreation Department at 425-6009.
These dates you may attend your choice of 1/2 day camp at $150 a week or all day camp, 8:30-4:30 at $275 a week, or an overnight camp for $375.

Visions Basketball Camp: Directed by former Camden High and Jacksonville University basketball standout Harvin Council, the annual Visions Basketball Camp is designed for boys and girls basketball players of all skill levels. Assisting Council throughout the week will be college and high school basketball players form in and around the region. Stations will be set up to work on individual skills while free throw shooting contests, three-on-three games, five-on-five games and skills competitions will also be part of the curriculum at this annual camp.

Sports Fun Camp: Learn basic fundamentals of baseball, soccer, basketball and football in this day camp. But, will also play fun games such as kickball, volleyball, Frisbee golf, table tennis, and horseshoes. Skill development, competition, team work and fun are the main objectives. Coaches Homer Carraway and April Garner will instruct the campers. Snacks are provided but campers must bring a bag lunch.

Location: KCRD Gym, 1042 West DeKalb St. in Camden
Ages: 6 - 12
Cost: $60, $5 reduction for each additional child
Hours: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Lugoff-Elgin Baseball Camp: This camp is held at Optimist Field at Lugoff-Elgin High School. Beginners through advanced players are welcome. Learn the fundamentals or improve your skills. Instructing the camp will be Randy Stokes, L-E High varsity coach with local college and high school players assisting.

Dates: June 2-4
Location: Optimist Field
Ages: 7 - 13
Cost: $40
Hours: 9 a.m. - Noon

North Central All Sports Youth Camp: Members of the North Central High School athletic department will host a two-day camp which will provide instruction in football, baseball, tennis, track, softball, basketball, volleyball and wrestling.
Date: June 2-3
Location: North Central High School
Ages: Grades 1 through 5
Cost: $35 (hot dog lunch included)
Hours: 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Registration/contact: Coach Louis Clyburn (803-572-2093); Youngsters may also register the morning of June 2 beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Camden High Cheerleading Camp: The camp is scheduled for June 3-5, inside the Camden High School Gym. Instructing the camp will be the Camden High School varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders. They will demonstrate and teach cheers, chants, jumps and more. Girls ages four through eight will learn cheer while girls ages nine through 12 will learn dance.

Cost: $45 (includes T-shirt)
Hours: 9 a.m. - Noon

Lugoff-Elgin Volleyball Camp: This camp is held is open to children ages nine and up. Come to learn or improve your skills. Players will be grouped by skill level. Beginners through advanced players are welcome. Instructing the camp will be Jessica Mullins, L-E High varsity coach, and high school players.

Location: Lugoff-Elgin High School Gym
Ages: 9 - 14 (beginner - advanced)
Cost: $60 (includes T-shirt) $5 reduction for each additional child from same family
Hours: 9 a.m.- Noon
Pre-registration: Required by June 4 through the Kershaw County Recreation Department at 425-6009.   

Little Bulldog Baseball Camp:  Learn the fundamentals of baseball or improve your skills in this camp. Daily training sessions will include hitting, base running, sliding and all aspects of defense. Campers will get one-on-one instruction. Camden High baseball coach Denny Beckley, members of his coaching staff and high school players will be instructing.

Location: American Legion Park in Camden
Ages: 6 - 13
Cost: $60 ($10 reduction for two or more children from same family)
Hours: 9 a.m. – noon
Pre-registration: Required by June 4 through the Kershaw County Recreation Department at 425-6009. 

Camden High Soccer Camp: This camp is offered for boys and girls who are beginners through intermediate players. Beginners will focus on skill development and work toward game play. Intermediate players will refine their skills and work on more advanced team concepts. Players will be group by skill level. Instructing the camp will be Stephen Sutusky, Camden High girls varsity coach and Mark Chickering, Camden High boys varsity coach with coaching staff and high school players from both teams. Players are asked to bring a ball, water bottle and shin guards if possible.

Ages: 6 - 13
Cost: $50 (includes T-shirt)
Hours: 9 am - Noon

Junior Golf Camp: Learn the fundamentals of golf or improve your skills in this camp. Matt McCarley, PGA professional and head pro at the Camden Country Club, will instruct boys and girls. Beginners through advance golfers are welcome.
Dates: June 16-19 and July 14-17 
Location: Camden Country Club, Knights Hill Road, Camden
Ages: 7 - 17 years old
Hours: 8 - 10 a.m.
Cost: $85 per camper
Pre-registration: Required by  June 111 or July 9 through the Kershaw County Recreation Department at 425-6009.   

Camden Softball Camp: This camp is offered for girls ages 7 - 14. Learn fundamental skills of fast pitch softball or improve your skills in the camp. Daily sessions will include defensive play, base running and hitting. Instructing the camp will be Camden High softball coaches Lynn Looney and her staff, with local players assisting.
Dates: June 16-20
Location: CHS Softball Field at American Legion Park
Ages: 7 - 14 years old
Cost: $60, $5 reduction for each additional child from same family
Hours: 9 a.m. - Noon     
Pre-registration: Required by June 11 through the Kershaw County Recreation Department at 425-6009.   

Gymnastics/Cheerleading Camp: Campers will learn all about the sport of gymnastics with the Wateree Gymnastics Center.  As part of the curriculum, campers will work on developing strength and flexibility, and skills on vault, bars, beam and floor exercise.   Also, if you are currently a cheerleader or want to be a cheerleader, then join up for Cheernastics. Trained coaches will help campers develop tumbling skills, stunt, motion and a cheer.
Dates: June 16-20
Location: Recreation Department, West DeKalb Street  in Camden
Ages: 3 and up
Cost: $65.00 1/2 day; $110 all day
Hours: 9 a.m.-noon / 1– 4 p.m. / or All Day  (If coming to camp all day, please bring a bag lunch.)
Pre-registration: Required by June 11through the Kershaw County Recreation Department at 425-6009.   

Vonnie Holliday/Little Bulldog Football Camp: The camp is sponsored by Vonnie Holliday, a former Camden High School standout, and now-retired 15-year NFL veteran. Holliday brings NFL players to town with him to talk with and instruct the campers. Learn the fundamentals of football and improve your skills in this camp. Daily training sessions will include all aspects of defense and offense. Instructing the camp will be the Camden High football staff and players. No football equipment needed. Campers are asked to wear cleats and bring a water bottle.

Lugoff-Elgin Basketball Camp: The primary focus of this camp will be to teach young players basic basketball skills and fundamentals.  The camp participants will also learn the concept of team play.  There will be some scrimmage games and awards for free throw shooting, hustling, sportsmanship and more.  There will be eight-foot goals for younger players.  The camp is instructed by Lugoff-Elgin Varsity girls head coach, Von Duncan, assistant coach, Tressa Dixon and varsity team members.

Ages: 5 - 14 years old
Hours:  9 a.m. - Noon
Cost:  $60 per camper (includes T-shirt)
Pre-registration Required by June 18 through the Kershaw County Recreation Department at 425-6009.   

Lugoff-Elgin Softball Camp: This camp is held at the Lugoff-Elgin High School softball field offered for girls ages six through rising ninth-graders. Beginner through advanced players are welcome.  Daily sessions will include offensive play, base running and hitting.  Directing the camp will be Lugoff-Elgin High School softball coach James Marlow along with members of his coaching staff and Lady Demon players.
Date: June 24-26
Location: Lugoff-Elgin High School Softball Field
Ages: Six through rising freshmen
Cost: $50
Pre-registration: Required by June 18 through the Kershaw County Recreation Department at 425-6009.   

Running Dogs Basketball Camp: The camp, co-directed by Camden High boys basketball head coach Ron McKie and Lady Bulldogs’ head coach Natalie Jeffcoat, is offered for boys and girls ages 5 - 14. The camp will concentrate on teaching young players the fundamentals of basketball and working on skills and team play. There will also be five-on-five and three-on-three games and awards for free throw, league champ, sportsmanship and more. There will be eight-foot goals for younger players. The camp is instructed by Camden High coaches and staff and high school players.
Dates: June 30- July 3

Ages: 5 - 14 years old
Hours: 9 a.m. - noon
Cost: $50 per camper
Pre-registration:  Required by June 25 through the Kershaw County Recreation Department at 425-6009.   

Camden Volleyball Camp: Open to beginners through intermediate players. Beginners will focus on skill development and work toward game play. Intermediate players will refine their skills and work on more advanced team concepts. Players will be grouped by skill level. Instructing the camp will be Camden High varsity head coach Paige Wilson along with her coaching staff and high school players.
Date: July 7-11
Location: Camden High School Gym
Ages: 8 & up
Cost: $60 (includes T-shirt) $5 reduction for each additional child from same family
Hours: 9 a.m. - noon
Pre-registration Required by July 2 through the Kershaw County Recreation Department at 425-6009.   

Youth Soccer Camp: This camp is open for boys and girls. Players will be grouped by age, size, and ability. Daily training sessions will include individual ball handling skills, partner skills, developmental games and much more. This week is the perfect way to introduce players to the game of soccer and to challenge advanced players to improve their game. Players must wear shin guards and bring a water bottle and soccer ball. The instructor is Peter Wittig, the varsity boys soccer coach at Blythewood High School.
Dates: July 28 - Aug. 1
Location: Kershaw West complex, Highway 1, Lugoff
Ages: 6-14
Hours: 9 a.m. - Noon
Cost: $65 (includes T-shirt)
