County’s youth sports summer camp season kicks off next week

With the school year coming to a close, it is time for summer sports camps in Kershaw County.

Here is a listing of the camps:

Little Bulldog Baseball Camp: Directed by Camden High head baseball coach Denny Beckley along with members of his coaching staff and Bulldog players, campers will receive fundamental instruction in all phases of baseball. Each player will be drilled defensively on pitching, infield, and outfield play. Hitting will be stressed every day. There will also be instruction on bunting, base running, and sliding. The campers are to bring their own gloves, bats, and helmets, if possible. Also, be sure that they are dressed properly with sweat pants or baseball pants for there will be scrimmages with potential for sliding. There will be a break from 11 a.m. until 11:20 a.m. at which time where campers may bring money to buy snacks from the concession stand or bring their own food and drink. T-shirts will be given to each camper as well.

Dates: May 29 - June 2

Location: American Legion Park in Camden

Ages: 6 - 13 

Cost: $60 ($10 reduction for each additional child from the same immediate family)

Hours: 9 a.m. - noon 

Pre-registration: Through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009 by May 27 or at American Legion Park prior to the start of the first day of camp. 

Lugoff-Elgin Baseball Camp: Beginners through advanced players are welcome. Learn the fundamentals or improve your skills. Instructing the camp will be Randy Stokes, L-E High varsity coach with local college and high school players assisting. Campers are asked to bring their own equipment, proper shoes, hats and water bottles.

Dates: May 30 - June 1

Location: Optimist Field

Ages: 6 - 13 

Cost: $50 ($5 reduction for each additional child from the same immediate family)

Hours: 9 a.m. - Noon 

Pre-registration: Through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009 or at Optimist Field starting at 8:15 a.m. on the first day of camp. 

Camden High School Cheerleading Camp: Instructing the camp will be the Camden High School varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleaders. They will offer both cheer and dance. Girls will be divided into two Ages groups: Ages 4 - 8 will learn cheer and Ages 9 - 12 will learn dance.  

Dates: May 30 - June 1   

Location: Camden High School Gym 

Ages: 4-12

Cost: $45 (includes T-shirt) 

Hours:  9a.m. - noon 

Pre-registration:  Required through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009 

Lugoff-Elgin Softball Camp: Held at the Lugoff-Elgin High School softball field, this camp is offered for girls Ages six through rising ninth-graders. Beginner through advanced players are welcome.  Daily sessions will include offensive play, base running and hitting.  Directing the camp will be Lugoff-Elgin High School softball coach James Marlow along with members of his coaching staff and Lady Demon players.

Date: June 5-8

Location: Lugoff-Elgin High School Softball Field

Ages: Six through rising freshmen

Cost: $50

Time: 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Pre-registration: Required through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009.    

“Beyond the Court” Basketball Camp: This camp, offered for boys and girls Ages six through 17, will teach the fundamentals of basketball and the aspects of life "Beyond the Court".  Emphasis will be placed on physical skills and techniques, proper training and conditioning, team sport, positive mental attitudes, healthy lifestyles and good sportsmanship as well as many other aspects.  The camp is instructed by Camden High varsity boys assistant coach Sterling Council along with other standout basketball players from throughout the region. 

Dates: June 5-7 

Location: Camden High School Gym 

Ages: 6-17 

Hours: 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.  

Cost: $60 per camper (includes T-shirt, lunch and sports bag)

Technical Soccer Camp: Technical Soccer Camp offers a fun & nurturing environment that is conducive to learning.  The curriculum will cover technical development, technical functional training, scrimmages, and includes our 1001 touches program.  "A" Licensed Director of Coaching for Liverpool FCA, Alan Riches, selects his staff based on many factors such as their enthusiasm, soccer knowledge and capabilities and the ability to establish relationships.  Each camper is treated as an individual with unique needs.  The purpose of the recreational camp is to have fun while developing soccer awareness and skills for long-term growth. The more serious player will undergo training that will encourage decision making within a competitive environment in order to maximize potential. 

Dates: June 5-9 

Location: Kershaw County West Complex, 519 Whitehead Road, Lugoff

Ages: 6-18 years old 

Cost: $65 (includes T-shirt) 

Hours: 9 a.m. - noon 

Pre-registration: Required through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009.    

Summer Tennis Program: Boys and girls with beginner to intermediate tennis skills are invited to participate.  Focus of program will be on basic tennis rules, on court play and skill development.  

Dates: June 5-29

Hours: 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Location:  Scott Park Tennis Courts

Ages:  8 - 16 

Cost:  $25 per participant (includes T-shirt)

Pre-registration Required by May 31 through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009.    

Horse Riding Camp or Lessons: Summer horse camp sessions or lessons are available through the Parks & Recreation Department. Linda Klein is the instructor.  Participants will become acquainted with the horse through grooming, tacking, and leading in the first level, working their way steadily towards jumping, horse show etiquette, conformation and rules of the show ring in higher levels. 

Camp dates: (Beginners) June 5-30; July 10-28; (Advanced) June 12-16

Hours: 8:30 a.m. - noon 

Location: Voxton Farm in Camden 

Cost: $150

Ages: 6 - 18 years old 

Registration: one week in advance through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009.    

(These dates you may attend your choice of half day camp at $150 a week or all day camp, (by appointment) at $275 a week. Lessons are available which meet one day a week for four weeks at $120 per person, by appointment.)

Demons Football Camp: Daily training sessions will include all aspects of defense, offense and specialty techniques. Phases of the kicking game, the passing game, skill positions and line play will also be included.  Instructing the camp will be the Lugoff-Elgin High head football coach and former NFL offensive lineman Matt Campbell along with the L-E varsity football staff and players. No football equipment needed. Campers are asked to wear T-shirt, shorts and cleats as well as bring a water bottle.

Dates: June 12-14

Hours: 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. 

Location: Lugoff-Elgin Stadium 

Ages: 8 and up 

Cost: $50 (includes T-shirt)

Camden High Wrestling Camp: This camp offers instruction in the 3 major styles of wrestling: Greco Roman, Freestyle, and Folkstyle. The camp intends to develop athletes in core fundamentals of each style no matter the skill level, from beginner to state qualifier. The camp’s goal is to improve in all aspects of wrestling while establishing confidence, respect, and promoting high moral standards to all participants.  Camden High varsity coach, Joey Hendrix, with coaching staff will instruct the camp.  

Dates: June 12-15

Location: Camden High School mini gym

Ages: Rising 3rd Grade to 12 Grade (Ages 8 & up) 

Cost: $60 per camper ($5 reduction for each additional child) (includes t-shirt) 

Hours: 9 a.m.-noon 

Pre-registration: Required through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009.    

Lugoff-Elgin Volleyball Camp: Come to learn or improve your skills. Players will be grouped by skill level. Beginners through advanced players are welcome. Instructing the camp will be Lugoff Elgin varsity head coach Katie Ham along with her staff and players. 

Dates: June 12 - 16 

Location: Lugoff-Elgin High School Gym 

Ages: 9 - 14 (beginner - advanced) 

Cost: $60 (includes T-shirt) $5 reduction for each additional child 

Hours: 9 a.m. - noon

Pre-registration: Required through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009.    

Lugoff-Elgin Basketball Camp: The primary focus of this camp will be to teach young players basic basketball skills and fundamentals.  The camp participants will also learn the concept of team play.  There will be some scrimmage games and awards for free throw shooting, hustling, sportsmanship and more.  There will be eight-foot goals for younger players.  The camp is instructed by Lugoff-Elgin varsity head coaches, Von Duncan (L-E girls) and Garrett Knight (L-E boys) with varsity players assisting.

Dates:  June 19 - 22

Location: Lugoff-Elgin High School Gym

Ages:   5 - 14 

Hours:  9 am. - noon

Cost:  $60 per camper (includes Y-shirt)

Pre-registration: Required through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009.    

North Central Youth Football Camp: Daily training sessions will include all aspects of defense, offense and specialty skills. Players will be divided into three age groups. Instructing the camp will be the first-year North Central High head football coach and NFL Super Bowl champion cornerback Tyronne Drakeford along with the NCHS varsity football staff.

Dates: June 19-21 and July 10-12

Hours: 9 a.m. - noon, snack provided 

Location: North Central High School Stadium 

Age groups: 7-9, 10-12, 13-15 

Cost: $25

Golf Camp: Learn the fundamentals of golf or improve your skills in this camp taught by Matt McCarley, PGA professional. Beginners through advance golfers are welcome. 

Dates: June 19 - 22 and July 17 - 20 

Location: Camden Country Club, Knights Hill Road, Camden

Ages: 7 - 17 

Hours:  8 a.m. - 10 a.m. 

Cost: $85 per camper 

Pre-registration: Required through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009.    

Camden High Softball Camp: Learn fundamental skills of fast pitch softball or improve your skills in the camp. Daily sessions will include defensive play, base running and hitting. Instructing the camp will be CHS varsity softball coach Lynn Looney along with her players assisting. 

Dates: June 19-23 

Location: CHS Softball Field 

Ages: 7 - 13 

Cost: $50

Hours: 9 a.m. - noon      

Pre-registration: Required through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009.    

Camden High Volleyball Camp: This camp is for beginners through intermediate players. Beginners will focus on skill development and work toward game play. Intermediate players will refine their skills and work on more advanced team concepts. Players will be grouped by skill level. Instructing the camp will be CHS head varsity coach Paige Wilson along with members of her coaching staff and high school players. 

Dates: June 26 - 30 

Location: Camden High School Gym 

Ages: 8 & up 

Cost: $60 (includes T-shirt) $5 reduction for each additional child

Hours: 9 a.m. - noon

Pre-registration: Required through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009.    

Technical soccer League (4 weeks): In partnership with KC Parks & Recreation, the Technical Soccer League offers a fun and nurturing environment designed to be conducive to long term development. The purpose of the league is to have fun while developing soccer awareness and skills for long term growth. The structure will include two nights of training and a scrimmage day focused on developing over winning.  

Dates/Hours:  July 6 - 29; Tuesday and Thursday Skill Session:  6 p.m. - 8 p.m.; Saturday morning scimmage games: 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.

Location:  KC West Complex, 519 Whitehead Road, Lugoff

Ages:  4 - 18 

Cost: $65 (includes two T-shirts)

Pre-registration required by June 28 (Times may be adjusted slightly based on numbers) through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009.

Instructing the camp will be the Camden High football staff and players. No football equipment needed. Campers are asked to wear cleats and bring a water bottle. The camp is sponsored by Vonnie Holliday, a former Camden High School and NFL standout.

Dates: July 24 - 27 

Location: Camden High School Gym 

Cost: $35 (includes T-shirt)

Ages: 7 - 14 

Hours: 9 a.m. - noon 

Pre-registration: Required through the Kershaw County Parks & Recreation Department at 425-6009.    

Soccer Camp: This camp is open for boys and girls. Players will be grouped by age, size, and ability. Daily training sessions will include individual ball handling skills, partner skills, developmental games and much more! This fun-filled week is the perfect way to introduce players to the game of soccer and to challenge advanced players to improve their game. Players must wear shin guards and bring a water bottle and soccer ball. The instructor is Peter Wittig, the varsity boys soccer coach at Blythewood High School.

Dates: August 7 - 11 

Location: Kershaw County West Complex, 519 Whitehead Road, Lugoff

Ages: 6 - 14 

Hours: 9 a.m. - noon 

Cost: $65 (includes T-shirt)
