Camden’s attempt at running the table in Region 4-AAA girls’ tennis has one last obstacle in front of it.

The Lady Bulldogs, the defending conference champion, improved to 7-0 in league action with Tuesday’s 6-0 blanking over Indian Land. That followed a 6-0 win over Chester for Pamela Smoak’s charges, which improved to 11-2 with a postponed Senior Night match left with Keenan next Tuesday.

In the sweep of Indian Land, Imani Wyatt cruised at first singles, 6-1, 6-0, while Anne Margaret Hutto won, 6-4, 6-1, at second singles. Senior Lexi Setzer and Emily Guy won at third and fourth singles, respectively, both by 6-1, 6-1 scores, before Eliza Reames closed singles play with a 6-6 (1-7), 6-3, 6-6 (10-7) victory.

The CHS second doubles pairing of Madison Montgomery and Mary Dawson Lindsay were extended to three sets before winning, 6-6, 7-5, 6-2.

“These girls, literally, never give up no matter what the score is. And they fight hard to the last point, yet, everywhere we go, we are complimented about our sportsmanship,” said Smoak whose team will open state tournament play at home on Oct. 24.

“We appreciate the great support we’ve gotten from the community, too. Everyone has been great. These girls have worked so hard and it’s just been a pleasure to coach them. I will miss this in the offseason but, hopefully, we will have several more weeks left in this season.”
