L-E SENIOR MICHAELAH WISE finished fifth while helping the Lady Demons to a third-place finish in Monday’s Region 4-5A championship.

On the strength of Michaelah Wise’s 79 and Tristan Ray’s 95, the Lugoff-Elgin girls’ golf team advanced to next Monday’s 5A  Lower State qualifier by finishing third in Monday’s Region 4-5A championship tournament held at Oak Hills in Columbia.

Wise and Ray, who finished sixth and seventh, respectively, on Monday, earned All-Region 4-5A honors for their play in the 18-hole event.

Jessica Ni scored her personal best of 117, Kelsey Ham shot a 145 and Brooke Jackson 139 for the Lady Demons whose 430 stroke total was just six shots behind runner-up Spring Valley.

Neither the Spring Valley team nor the Lady Demons had the depth to compete with Blythewood whose five scorers all shot in the 70’s for Blythewood. Blythewood’s Ella Stalvey, an eighth grader, shot even par to earn the Region Individual Champion honors. Sumter’s Danae Brunson qualified individually to advance to Upper State, scoring 102.

“I am really proud of our team. Oak Hills is a difficult course to walk and except for a few holes where they could get on carts, they had to walk it all. And it was not super pleasant weather. When it wasn’t raining, it was hot,” said L-E head coach Zoe Dommel as to the conditions on Monday afternoon.

“I checked their scorecards and I don’t think a single player picked up at 10 (strokes.) They continued to play and the highest scores were 11. The maximum score was set at 10, but they elected to not pick up. This experience is so good for the team. However, we could not have advanced if the team did not have both Michaelah and Tristan scoring well.”

Monday’s 5A Lower State Qualifier will be played at Columbia Country Club. Region 4 is a split region with the first two teams headed to Upper State tourney and the third place team to the Lower State event.
