A funeral service to celebrate the life of Joan Meredith Simmonds McKenzie, age 78 of Camden, SC, will be November 16, 2017 at 12:30PM in the St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church, with committal to follow at 2:00PM in the Fort Jackson National Cemetery.  Reverend Angela Jennings will officiate. The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 15, 2017 from 6:00-7:30PM in the Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel.   Memorials may be made to Wounded Warriors Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256 or the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, 647 Lachiotte Road, Lugoff, SC, 29078.                                 

Joan died Thursday, November 9, 2017. She was born in Flint, Michigan, daughter of the late Beryl L. and Anna Freeman Simmonds.  Joan was graduate of Northern High School in Flint Michigan where she was ‘Senior Queen’ and a graduate of Michigan State University.   Joan was a member of St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church, a teacher and antique proprietor.  She loved to travel and being a “Grandma”.

Joan is survived by her husband, Col.  Robert C. McKenzie, Sr, US Army, Ret.; 4 children, Melinda Joan Waltner (Paul) , Ann Arbor, MI, Major LeAnn Marie Reed, US Army, Ret. ( Col. Meredith S. Reed, Jr., US Army, Ret.), of Indianapolis, IN,  Dr. Robert C. McKenzie, Col. US Army (Marimer) Landstuhl, Germany and Kevin Carl McKenzie (Rossane) of Greenville, SC; 9 grandchildren.

Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.
