John F. “Jack” Hair, 90, of Columbia, died Wednesday, August 1, 2018. Born March 6, 1928 in Blackville, SC, he was a son of the late Lennie Lee Hair and Mamie Dora Lancaster Hair.

Mr. Hair was a long-time member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church where he served as deacon. He retired from Palmetto Baking Company after 17 years and later from Yarborough Distributors, with 20 years of service. He loved the great outdoors and working in his yard, and was known as “Granddaddy” to some and “Gagar” to others.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Sarah Davis Hair; children, Jackie Starling (Jerry) and Farrell Hair (Merci), all of Elgin; six grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren;     and two great-great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Hair was preceded in death by brothers, Lewis Hair and an infant brother; and a sister, Frances Hair Delk.

The funeral service for Mr. Hair will be held 11 o’clock, Saturday, August 4, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road, Ext. Columbia, with the Rev. Terry Smoak officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home. Interment will be held 3 p.m., Sunday, August 5 at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family request memorials be made to Epworth Children’s Home, 2900 Millwood Avenue, Columbia, SC 29205.
