A large group of family and friends gathered in Rectory Square to celebrate the memory of Dr. William Lawrence “Larry” Owen III and his many contributions to Camden and Kershaw County during a Legacy Leadership Bench dedication ceremony held July 12. Owen, who passed away in 2008, was a long-time Camden resident, having graduated from Camden High School in 1969 and practiced dentistry in Camden for more than 30 years. A member of First Baptist Church in Camden, he served as a deacon and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. He was active in many local organizations, including the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce, Camden Rotary Club, Camden Community Theater and Camden Concert band. He served on a number of boards and commissions, including the city Zoning Board of Appeals, Historic Camden board of directors, Kershaw County YMCA board and Elgin Town Council. He was an avid and active member of the Camden Community Band and his bench is positioned in the park so that people who sit there can especially enjoy CCCB concerts in the park. Shown (front row, from left) in this photo are Cathy Moss, Orline Moss, Catherine Marable, Virginia Owen, (Back row, from left) Will Owen and Tom Marable.
