Historic Camden is proud to announce that the museum is the recipient of a $200,000 grant from South Carolina department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism (SCPRT) for the 2018-2019 fiscal year. Senator Vincent Sheheen and Representative Laurie Funderburk presented the museum with a check after the legislature approved the funding. The funds are to be put towards deferred maintenance and restoration projects on the site.

“We are so excited to do renovations and restoration work on our circa 1800 historic buildings on our site,” Historic Camden Executive Director Halie Brazier said. “This grant will help us improve the experience for visitors and it will help in the preservation of our collection and historic structures.”

The funds will be used primarily for renovations and improvements at the circa 1790 Craven House, and the circa 1825 log cabins called the Drakeford House and Bradley House. The National Park Service and SCPRT performed an assessment at Historic Camden in 2016 which outlined maintenance, renovation and preservation needs on site, and these three structures were noted as needing critical attention. Those recommendations will serve as a guide for the restoration. Historic Camden will also work on creating a programming space in the Drakeford House, and they will replace fencing and part of the palisade wall.

“We are extremely grateful to SCPRT and to Senator Sheheen and Representative Funderburk for their strong support of our museum,” Brazier said. “We are looking forward to completing renovations and showing the site off next year!”
