While results were still unofficial Thursday, Jimmy Lucas Jr. and Don Witham appear to be joining and returning, respectively, to Bethune Town Council.

Two seats on the five-seat council came up for re-election this year: Witham’s and Councilman John Fulmer’s. Fulmer had announced earlier this year that he would not seek re-election.

Witham, an incumbent councilman, was the only candidate to officially file to be on the ballot with the Kershaw County Office of Voter Registration. He said his plans, if re-elected, include seeing the Bethune Water System Upgrade project through to completion as well as other priorities such as upgrading and modernizing the town’s billing systems and aggressively pursuing grants and other funding options to hire a second full-time police officer for the town.

Lucas, a write-in candidate, was the only other candidate who ran.

According to Kershaw County Office of Voter Registration Assistant Director Jim Fitzpatrick, Witham received 41 votes. Lucas received at least 15. However, the Election Commission must determine the status of several other votes that were cast as write-ins. While no other candidates appear to have been written in or otherwise proffered for office, several need to be certified due to such issues as questionable spellings, Fitzpatrick said.

The election commission meets today to certify the election.
