A Pinewood man died Saturday evening after a car that ran a stop sign struck his pickup truck in the Cassatt area.

According to Kershaw County Coroner David West, Mack Bartlette III, of Pinewood, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“He was headed west on Lockhart Road and a car ran a stop sign on Robinson Town Road … and hit him on his driver’s side,” West said Sunday morning.

West said the driver of the other car was airlifted to Palmetto Richland Hospital. He said dispatchers received a call about the accident at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.

According to S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) Lance Cpl. Matt Southern, Sammie Anthony, of Kershaw, was traveling north on Robinson Town Road in a 2004 Pontiac GTO when he ran the stop sign at Lockhart and struck Bartlette’s 1993 Toyota pickup. Southern said Bartlette was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the pickup. He said Anthony was wearing a seatbelt.

The SCHP is continuing to investigate the crash.

Southern did not indicate that any charges had been filed yet against Anthony.
