The walls came tumbling down ... down

Cornell English, of CIDS Inc., reaches out to catch a basketball dropped from the claws of an excavator deftly operated by Alvin McDaniels during the demolition of LES' gym Friday morning. Another basketball rests at English’s feet; the men later found two more. The demolition makes way for the beginning of construction for a new two-story LES. A ceremonial groundbreaking took place in front of the gym May 22. Actual groundbreaking will take place soon and students will attend the current LES while the new school is built.

(Around 8 a.m. Friday, June 9, CIDS Inc. began demolishing the Lugoff Elementary School gymnasium. Senior Writer Martin L. Cahn was the only member of the media on hand for the demolition and took these series of photographs during the next 90 minutes. The photoseries begins with an image from today's [Tuesday, June 13] front page showing how one heavy machine operator uses the equipment like an extension of his own body.
