We would like to offer our hearty congratulations and deepest thanks to North Central High School (NCHS) Principal David Branham, who was recently named Principal of the Year by the Kershaw County School District.

Branham started his career as an agricultural education teacher and coach at NCHS and became an assistant principal there in 2009. In addition, he served as principal for both Mt. Pisgah and Bethune elementary schools. During Branham’s tenure as principal of NCHS, U.S. News & World Report named NCHS one of the “Best High Schools in America.”

We all know how important teachers are to our children’s futures -- that’s a given.  But we wonder how often people stop to think of the role a school principal plays. The principal has a multi-faceted and difficult job, balancing the day-to-day management of a wide cross-section of employees with the infrastructural needs of a large campus and physical plant, much of which is juxtaposed between the confines, demands and requirements of a multi-layered bureaucracy and public opinion. If a teacher is doing a good job, you can bet that a principal has played a significant role in that teacher’s success. If the public is not happy with a given situation at a school, chances are, the principal will be the lightning rod for any criticism.

Yes, we know that’s the way of the world and comes with the territory, which is all the more reason to recognize an individual for a job well done.
