We join the community in mourning the loss and commemoraing the life of Amy J. McLester.

Mrs. McLester, a highly respected and long-time educator in Kershaw County, passed away last week at the age of 83. Friends and colleagues universally describe her as a serene, soft-spoken person possessed of a quiet, confident personal strength, sterling character and formidable professional acumen underpinned by a deep love of her family and faith in God. She was never anything other than honest, forthright and diligent, or as one friend put it, she “always did everything in a lovely way, but she was efficient, direct and got things done.”

She was not one to boast of her accomplishments, yet they were numerous, profound, inspirational. In an era of burgeoning social change, she was a strong example to many, especially minority women, who might otherwise not have pursued their dreams.

As another friend noted, she was always mentoring young women and many young teachers credit her with inspiring them to become teachers.

McLester will be remembered as a role model, a leader, even a pioneer, but most important, she will be remembered as a true friend. Her example is one to which we all can and should aspire.

Thank you and Godspeed.
