Holiday shopping

Two weeks from today, the holiday shopping season officially starts with the day known as “Black Friday.”

Whether you are one to join the throngs of Black Friday or prefer to bide your time, we hope your holiday shopping itineraries include our many local businesses here in Camden and Kershaw County.

We do understand that big box stores and shopping malls can offer things some smaller, more local businesses might not immediately have, nor do we discourage anyone from visiting those places. We believe every business has its niche and fulfills an important need.

However, by shopping locally, you may not be traveling very far but you are, in fact, going the extra mile. When you shop locally, you are putting money into our local economy, which can only help everyone in the long run. You are letting your friends and neighbors who may own local businesses know that you do value, appreciate and support what they do. By being visible in our downtowns and our area businesses, you are showing others -- out-of-towners passing through, for example -- that we have a great place worth visiting and exploring. People are naturally curious, so when they see lively, happening streets and businesses, they are going to want to check it out -- and when they discover what we already know, they are going to spread the word.

And darn it, it’s just fun to get out and see friends and neighbors you may not get to otherwise see as often.

So when you get ready to go hunting those holiday gifts, please consider adding our local businesses to your shopping plans. Chances are, you’ll find great things, indeed, most everything you need -- and you won’t have to go nearly as far to get them.
