Is Kershaw County going to be the site of a new Columbia YMCA branch?

The jury is still out -- or rather, the data is still being studied -- but there seems to be a pretty good chance.

Staff members of the YMCA of Columbia, along with representatives from a consulting group, were in Kershaw County this spring. They interviewed some 31 community leaders in face-to-face interviews to try to gauge interest, as well as to test the feasibility of bringing a branch of the Columbia YMCA to Kershaw County.

Assuming there is enough interest and support, the organization hopes to build a facility that would include a swimming pool, gym and sports fields, wellness center and multi-purpose space, after school/schools out programs and intergenerational programs.

The question seems to be whether or not the community can and will support it.

We believe that if done right, this could be quite an asset to the greater Kershaw County Community. The YMCA is a strong organization with exemplary programs and services and we have seen its positive influence and significant impact and contribution in other communities throughout the state. So, being as the C-I is always on the side of positive community development and influences, we do hope this can come to pass.

Still, we would suggest all parties proceed cautiously; there are a number of factors and obstacles that will undoubtedly reveal themselves as time goes on.
