We would like to offer our hearty congratulations to the Kershaw County School District (KCSD) class of 2018. This year, our seniors pulled in some $14 million in scholarship funds. That’s the largest total number of scholarships awarded in the 11 years since KCSD began tracking such numbers.

By contrast, in 2007 -- the first year KCSD started tracking those numbers -- the combined graduating class of 541 students received more than $4.8 million in scholarships, which was a very respectable achievement.

This year, 681 seniors who graduated from the district received $14.03 million in scholarships. Lugoff-Elgin High School led the way with 394 graduates receiving $8.73 million in scholarship. Camden High School followed with 203 graduates and $4.02 million in scholarships. North Central High School saw 84 graduates received $1.28 million in scholarships.

A year ago, 671 graduates received scholarships totaling $12.41 million.

We should also congratulate and thank the teachers, administrators and staff of KCSD -- these achievements occurred in great part because of the work you have done to build, nurture and maintain a positive educational experience for our children.

We are very proud of our graduates -- then and now -- and look forward to celebrating the achievements of the class of 2019 this time next year.
