Readers will undoubtedly notice -- and enjoy -- Senior Writer Martin L. Cahn’s front page story about Betty Slade being honored with a city of Camden Leader’s Legacy bench.

We would like to join the community in expressing our salutations, congratulations and admirations for for her.

While obviously, those who are honored this way are deserving, we especially are appreciative of the contributions of Mrs. Slade, who served as the city clerk for the city of Camden for nearly 30 years.

Very few people possessed as much institutional knowledge as she did. That, coupled with a professionalism that was second to none as well as a wonderfully pleasant personality and a terrific sense of humor, made working with her a pleasure and knowing her a joy and a privilege.

In addition to her long hours and deep contributions to the city, Mrs. Slade has tirelessly worked for many years with this community in other capacities, most notably with her church and with the Kershaw County Farmers Market.

So, congratulations and thank you, and enjoy spending a few minutes resting on your bench whenever you take a notion. You have certainly earned it.
