Editorial: Great turnout!

We are happy to see that Kershaw County citizens take their citizenship so seriously.

Tuesday’s Election Day turnout is likely going to go down as the largest turnout -- at least as far as mid-term elections go -- and may be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, in recent years.

We can certainly guess, but won’t try to speculate, on what exactly was driving such large numbers. All we can say is, your vote is your voice and Kershaw County seems to get that.

What is also nice to see is the fact that everything seemed to run fairly smoothly. There were no reports of  wild accusations of foul deeds, no personal scrums in the polls, no bad attitudes. There were some mechanical problems, but that’s what happens when your machinery is nearly 20 years old.

Did the election turn out the way you wanted? Hope so, but if not, at least you stepped up to be heard. And our guess is that you were, loud and clear -- and that’s what’s important. Politicians from the grassroots on up need to know the people are not just interested, but actively involved. These numbers definitely put the people’s elected employees on notice that elections are more than just a little dance we all do every couple of years.

Elections are, among other things, job performance evaluation instruments.

Our elected officials would be wise to remember that.
