McLester Scholarships awarded

Glen Levine Jr. and R’Mondi Washington recently receive the 2017 Thomas E. McLester and Amy J. McLester Scholarships sponsored by Camden First United Methodist Church. These scholarships are awarded in memory of Thomas E. McLester and in honor of Amy Mclester. The scholarship is funded by Camden First UMC members, Jackson High School alumni, former Camden High School students, family and friends.

   Mr. McLester was a former teacher, coach and mentor for more than 36 years in the Kershaw County School District. Amy J. McLester is the former principal of Lugoff Elementary School. Since 2010, scholarship awards have been given to 20 deserving students for their outstanding academic achievement, leadership and strong desire to further their education at the college level. Since its inception, a total of $20,000 has been awarded.

  R’Mondi, the daughter of Raymond Washington and the late Julia Carlos, is a 2017 graduate of Lugoff-Elgin High School. She will be attending Claflin University, Orangeburg and plans to major in political science. Her goal is to become an attorney.

   Glen, the son of Glen, Sr. and Wendy Levine, a 2017 graduate of Dutch Fork High School, Irmo, will be attending Coastal Carolina University, Conway, and will pursue courses leading to veterinary school.

  These students are extraordinary, gifted and talented and work diligently, notes Mrs. McLester. They are involved n many ministries at Camden First UMC.  They have the potential for a bright future and no doubt will become outstanding leading citizens in their communities.
