CPD arrests three in separate EBT fraud case
With a state-issued electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card you can purchase a bottle of water, just like with your typical bank debit card. Unlike with a regular debit card, however, you can't purchase a bottle of water and get cash back with an EBT card. But three Camden business owners have been ignoring that law lately, and the Camden Police Department (CPD) has been watching. Eleven charged in second phase of CPD drug investigation
Eleven people have been arrested during a two-week period described as "Phase II" of an ongoing Camden Police Department (CPD) drug investigation. The 11 suspects, arrested between Aug. 21 and Sept. 2, were charged in connection with undercover drug buys which agents working with the CPD conducted as far back as June 2008. School district auctions mobiles online
All of the portable classrooms at the old Jackson School have been sold for a total of $4,350, according to Kershaw County School District Coordinator for Procurement and Contracted Services Ed Estridge. "We sold all seven of the portables that were at the old Jackson School," Estridge said, adding that there was no need to hold onto the trailers at the old elementary school. "They were sold on an online auction Web site called govdeals.com." Selling the portables, and all other school district surplus equipment online, Estridge said, has allowed the school district to make a lot more money by simply giving a wider range of people the option of placing a bid on the equipment. Local Extension office open for business
Kershaw County's Clemson Extension Service office is not closing. In the wake of deep state funding cuts, Clemson University Extension Service has offered separation incentive programs to all of its employees, including those in Kershaw County. That has led to speculation that the local Extension office may be in jeopardy. "We want to make sure people know that no one has been fired," said Deon Legette, lead extension agent with the local Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service. Former deputies' decertification recorded at CJA
Oddie Tribble Jr., the former Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputy accused of beating an arrested man with an asp Aug. 5, is no longer certified as a law enforcement officer. Neither is Jimmy Simmons, the deputy fired for not acting to prevent Tribble from harming the victim. Full Story

Kershaw County School District parents have an easy way to see their children's school assignments by signing up for the district's eChalk parent alerts. "This is a great way to have detailed information from your child's teacher sent directly to your e-mail as often as every day," said Kershaw County School District Communications Director Mary Anne Byrd.
