Dr. Erica L. Groshen, who is currently the U.S. Department of Labor’s Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, was the featured speaker at a breakfast hosted by Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce and Camden Business Alliance. Dr. Groshen, who is responsible for job numbers and inflation numbers put out by the U.S. Department of Labor, explained the history of labor statistics as well as the role of labor statistics and how citizens of the county can use these statistics for their businesses. She also showed a video which presented ways in which people can use statistics provided by the U.S. Dept. of Labor. During her presentation, Dr. Groshen explained that South Carolina and Kershaw County experienced a higher unemployment rate than the U.S. average during the Great Recession of 2008. She also said that Kershaw County is known by the Bureau of Labor Statistics more for its manufacturing sector compared to the U.S. and S.C., but less so for its health services sector.
