Salley McAden McInerney, a former writer for The State newspaper in Columbia and Gwinnett Daily News in Atlanta, is joining the Chronicle-Independent as a feature writer. McInerney will write feature stories on a regular basis beginning this month.
“I look forward to Salley’s stories appearing in the newspaper and know that our readers will enjoy them,” Publisher Mike Mischner said.
McInerney grew up in Columbia. She graduated from Salem Academy in Winston-Salem, N.C., in 1974, and from the University of the South, in Sewanee, Tenn., in 1978. She also studied at the Penland School of Crafts in Penland, N.C.
McInerney’s has received national and regional awards for her writing, including the Best of Scripps Award, National Newspaper Association Best Spot News Story, Georgia Associated Press (GAP) Story of the Year, GAP Joe Parham Trophy, S.C. Press Association (SCPA) Judson Chapman Award, and numerous first-place SCPA awards for column and feature writing.
“I suspect readers will find that Salley’s feature stories are going to be among their favorites -- you don’t win these types of awards without finding those ‘hooks’ that reel people into a story,” C-I Editor Martin L. Cahn said.
McInerney is also a published novelist. Her first novel, 2012’s Journey Proud, is based upon growing up in Columbia in the early 1960s and is a five-star pick on Amazon. She is currently working on her second novel, Riding Lessons, which is based upon the life lessons she has learned as an equestrian.
Salley is married to Michael McInerney, director of external affairs at the S.C. Department of Commerce. They live in historic Camden where their claim to fame is having the “moving Santa” -- a life-size Santa Claus that moves from place to place in their front yard during December.
The McInerney’s have two grown children, Ann Skipper McInerney, of Charlotte, N.C., and Michael “Mac” McInerney, of Dallas, Texas.
McInerney is a member of The Camden Hunt and is a self-taught artist, working in mixed media.
