Thirty years ago Tom Price, president and CEO of Protective Packaging, Inc., began his endeavor to become a successful custom folding carton manufacturer in a 10,000 square foot leased building on Percival Road with one piece of equipment and one employee, himself. Now located off Highway 601 in Lugoff, Protective Packaging, Inc. recently expanded from 60,000 square feet to 130,000 square feet last year, and continues to grow.
“We do more business in the first five hours in the working day than we did the first year I was in business,” Price said.
Price commented about his business’ thirty year anniversary, noting, “it doesn’t seem that long.”
Tips for starting and continuing a good business? Price said persistence, being realistic, thinking outside the box -- no pun intended -- a good relationship with his customers and detailed attention to each of their accounts, and a good work ethic are all important characteristics. Price said he believes he has passed along his work ethic down to his children, which all of them bring to Protective Packaging. Another important factor of his success is the Protective Packaging team, he said. Price currently employs a total of 55 employees, and without their hard work Protective Packaging would not be where it is today, he said.
Grateful and humbled by such a successful business, Price still enjoys working and doesn’t see retirement in his near future, he said.
