South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) will close its Camden office May 29, according to a letter included with customers’ most recent bills. The office’s address is 205 Sumter Hwy., at the corner of Ehrenclou Drive where South Broad Street becomes Sumter Highway.
In the letter, SCE&G said it made the decision after “evaluating a variety of factors,” including “changes in customer traffic at the Camden business office especially as more customers shift to online payment.”
Only customer service functions are leaving Camden; actual gas operations will not be affected.
According to the letter, SCE&G opened the office 26 years ago, in 1989.
In its letter to customers, SCE&G said its “commitment to providing excellent customer service” to the Camden community will “remain unchanged” as its service representatives continue working around the community “to perform any and all necessary services or repairs.”
In the meantime, SCE&G offered a variety of ways customers can continue to pay their bills after the Camden office closes. Bills can be paid online on the company’s website, www.sceg.com; by mail to SCE&G, P.O. Box 100255, Columbia, SC 29202; by phone using debit or credit cards at 1-800-450-9160; all Walmart stores throughout the Midlands, including Camden; and at Kroger’s northeast Columbia store, 10136 Two Notch Road.
In addition, customers needing to speak to a representative about their bill or to make payment arrangements can call 1-800-251-7234 to speak to a customer service representative 24 hours a day, according to the letter.
