George Washington practiced this vocation when he was a young man. Here in Camden, Samuel Wyly and John Belton were colonial surveyors. Imagine the task before the surveyor in colonial America: charting the wilderness and measuring and marking it out into parcels for new settlers, drawing an exact plat of the desired property, identifying the creeks and land features in a new land, encountering Native Americans who do not understand what you are doing or why you are there.
