Burns retires after 31 years of service to city
John Burns Retires
Camden Mayor Alfred Mae Drakeford (center) moves to give retiring City Building Official/Zoning Administrator John Burns a hug after presenting him with a gift for his more than 31 years of service to the city. Applauding are (from left) councilmen Jeffrey Graham, Hamilton Boykin and Stephen Smoak. Burns joined the staff in 1991. (Gee Whetsel/C-I)
Members of Camden City Council recognized a very special employee when they met for the first time in the new year and at a new time. Council voted in December to move their meeting time from 4 p.m., a time it picked during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, to 5:30 p.m. to allow more citizens the opportunity to attend meetings.
