City council to consider 6 percent electric rate hike

Camden City Council will consider imposing a 6 percent electric rate increase to be effective with the first billing cycle in January 2014. Council will take up the possible increase during its regular meeting Tuesday night. In a memorandum to City Manager Mel Pearson attached to Tuesday night’s meeting agenda, Assistant Finance Director Debra Courtney noted that the increase is necessary due to a new wholesale power contract with Duke Energy Progress (DEP) that will cause the city’s expenses to increase in 2014.
