This playground equipment at Rectory Square is off-limits for now, thanks to an approximately 180-year-old, 80-foot-tall post oak tree that fell it on during the night of May 15 following heavy rains. According to Camden Urban Forester Liz Gilland, it took four days for staff to cut up, haul off and clean up the debris since this picture was taken. “And we have yet to haul away the stump (it weighs over 7,000 pounds our equipment can’t lift it -- yikes!)” Gilland said. She said the tree fell due to a combination of saturated soil and a partially decayed root system. Some of the wood from the tree was set aside for firewood; three large chunks are being used for kids to play on. The playground equipment is off-limits, though, until a certified playground inspector can check it out and see if parts can be replaced or it is a total loss.
