Following a more than two-week investigation, the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) arrested a church secretary Wednesday for stealing more than $97,000 in church funds. During an interview with a KCSO investigator, the secretary -- identified in a KCSO press release as Deborah Bradshaw Barfield, 53, of Jesup Court, Elgin -- admitted to taking the money from St. John’s United Methodist Church in Lugoff in order buy drugs she purchased on the streets of Columbia. Investigators charged Barfield with breach of trust with fraudulent intent and forgery, both in excess of $10,000.
