Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) County deputies and S.C. Highway Patrol troopers arrested Derius Mykeyon Toney, 21, of Belmont Drive, Sumter, after he tried to pull a gun on them at a safety check point late Sunday night at the intersection of Porter Crossroads and Fort Jackson Road south of I-20 near Elgin. According to a KCSO report, a trooper dealing with Toney at the checkpoint flagged down a deputy who then heard the trooper -- who had grabbed Toney’s wrists -- tell him to stop reaching for what appeared to be a gun. The deputy assisted by opening the driver’s door and grabbing Toney out of the vehicle while telling him to stop reaching in his pocket.
