Three days later and the odor of charred timbers still reached the quiet street at noon Tuesday. A woman and her grandchildren escaped a fire Saturday night that destroyed her home in the Haigs Creek subdivision outside Elgin. According to Kershaw County Fire Marshal Gene Faulkenberry, a lightning strike started the fire, completely destroying the home on Lillifield Drive, a car, golf cart and at least one other piece of personal property.
