Elgin, 11:45 a.m. Sunday -- Members of the S.C. Highway Patrols Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team, or MAIT, work carefully as a trooper looks on at the scene of head-on collision that took two lives earlier in the morning. A trooper at the scene estimated MAIT would continue investigating for another two hours. Troopers blocked off the intersection, primarily from Lugoff side, forcing many drivers to turn around and head back to U.S. 601 and I-20 to make their way to Columbia. - photo by Martin L. Cahn
A head-on collision on Fort Jackson Road (S.C. 12) where White Pond Road becomes Porter Cross Road resulted in the deaths of a young couple early Sunday morning. According to the S.C. Highway Patrol’s (SCHP) online Real-Time Traffic Information website, the collision occurred at or shortly before 6:19 a.m. More than four hours later, at 10:40 a.m., SCHP’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team, or MAIT, was still on the scene. While the victims had already been transported to area hospitals, their vehicles remained at the scene, one -- a dark green 4-door sedan -- on a rollback, the other what appeared to be a mauve four-door hatchback.
