Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) now has 12 more swift water rescuers after the group completed training at the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, N.C. The training consisted of an intensive two-day course focusing on recognition and avoidance of common river hazards, execution of self-rescue techniques and simple rescue methods used in team rescue scenarios. These 12 rescue swimmers join the eight current members on the Lugoff Swift Water Rescue Team. The addition of the rescue swimmers comes after the Lugoff Fire District’s board of commissioners reviewed and approved recommendations from LF-R Chief Dennis Ray from an after-action review of the department’s response to October 2015’s historic flood.
