The Camden Police Department (CPD) and Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office shut down a portion of U.S. 521 North near the intersection of Boykin Road after a man sitting in a vehicle in Morningside of Camden’s parking lot threatened to harm himself.

According to CPD Chief Joe Floyd, around 7 p.m., the man -- whose identity is being withheld -- went to the nursing home to speak with someone who works there. That somehow led the man to sit alone in a car in the parking lot and threaten to harm himself. Floyd said the man was not a danger to anyone else, and that U.S. 521 had been shut down in both directions near the facility to keep others from inadvertently becoming a part of the scene.

Officers spent about an hour and a half communicating with the man before they safely took him into custody and transported him to have a mental evaluation, Floyd said.

The chief said it was still possible for the man to face charges in connection with the incident.
