S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) agents arrested a long-time assistant to Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews for embezzlement on Thursday. According to a SLED press release, agents charged Samantha “Sam” West Connell, 34, of Catoe Road, Kershaw, with one count of embezzlement of public funds, value less than $10,000 for failing to deposit funds to the Kershaw County Treasurer’s Office. SLED investigated the case at the request of the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office and had Connell booked at the Kershaw County Detention Center.
