A young Elgin-area woman died Wednesday afternoon when she was struck by a train.

In a brief statement, Kershaw County Coroner David West identified the deceased as Olivia Marie Matheson-Brazell, 26. He said Matheson-Brazell was struck while trying to cross the train track near Kelly Lane. Online maps show Kelly Lane dead-ending at the railroad tracks; a portion of Kelly Street is on the other side of the rail line.

“(She) was wearing a headset and it appears she did not hear the train horn,” West said, adding that dispatchers received the call from CSX around 1:15 p.m. that a train had struck someone.

West said Matheson-Brazell died at the scene.
