Bethune councilman addresses school board at meeting
Asks to keep BES open or build new school on Hwy. 341
Bethune Town Councilman Don Witham, armed with some financial facts, asked the Kershaw County Board of Trustees to consider keeping Bethune Elementary School (BES) open or, if it must consolidate BES and Mt. Pisgah Elementary School (MPES), to do so somewhere between the two communities on Hwy. 341. Witham, joined at the meeting by council members John Fulmer and Cindy Hunter, began by passing out some spreadsheets showing how much it costs to operate BES, how much revenue is brought in through taxes from an area approximating the school’s attendance zone and what state funds are added to those tax revenues.
