The town of Bethune and Bethune Elementary School (BES) suffered a power outage Jan. 8. According to a Duke Energy representative, the outage occurred at approximately 10 a.m. due to equipment malfunctions with a transmission at a substation and left about 1,000 Duke Energy customers without power for several hours. According to Kershaw County School District Director of Communications Mary Anne Byrd, the electric company told district administrators it did not expect the power to be back on for two to three hours.
