Antuan Augustus (second from left) and Kirsten Baker (second from right), both seniors at Lugoff-Elgin High School, were the winners of the Camden Lugoff Elks 2012 Mary Ellen Ahner Scholarship. Rich Wagner (right) and Vickie Schermbeck (left) from the local Elks Lodge presented the cash awards to the winners on May 17th at the school during a Senior Awards Day Ceremony. The Mary Ellen Ahner Scholarship is awarded each year to students who plan to enter the field of education. The Mary Ellen Ahner Scholarship was established by Jim Ahner in remembrance of his wife Mary Ellen Ahner. Mary Ellen was a teacher in the Lugoff/Elgin area, an active Elk in the Camden Lugoff Lodge and an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. Kirsten plans to become a history teacher and Antoine’s goal is to teach Spanish. The qualifications for the scholarship included academic and social achievements as well as a written essay describing their achievements and decision to become teachers.
