Lugoff Elgin High School’s Air Rifle Team recently qualified for the U.S. Army Cadet Command Fourth Brigade Best of the Best Competition held in Lexington, N.C., on Saturday, Dec. 8th. Forty-eight teams competed and the top 20 were invited to the Brigade Championships, which is an annual event. L-EHS’ Air Rifle Team was one of only eight schools to represent South Carolina and competed against other schools from Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia and Washington, DC. The top two schools from this event will advance to a national competition.
This year is the first time the Air Rifle Team has qualified for the event, but only the third year the team has even been in place.
“I am very proud that these cadets have come such a long way in two years, [and they] are able to compete with some of the best shooters in the Southeast,” LTC Rayford McDowell, JROTC senior instructor, said. “I’m really happy for them. They have worked hard. It takes a lot of concentration, patience, and self discipline to become a good shooter. They are displaying that as best they can right now.”
At the event, each shooter fired from three different positions: prone, standing and kneeling. From each position, the team members will shoot 20 times at a target located 33 feet away. Results will be provided at a later date.
