To honor the upcoming Olympic Games to be held in London this summer, the Montessori School of Camden’s Parents Advisory Council, led by Joanna Heaton and Anne Conder, organized a mini-Olympic experience for the children.

The event began May 4 with the students passing the torch until finally it reached a guest “ancient Greek,” who explained the origins and nature of the Games beginning in the 8th century, BCE. Children then rotated through stations in which they learned about Greece and Britain, sampled a tasting station with Greek and English food, and made their torches and laurel wreaths.

The children then participated in a number of Olympic games, scaled and modified to their ages, including relay races, broad jump, soccer ball kick, discus throw and “equestrian jump.”
