Palmetto Gold & Silver: 8 schools honored

Eight Kershaw County elementary and middle schools -- up from only two local K-8 schools last year -- were among more than 430 schools statewide recognized Monday by the S.C. Department of Education for academic achievement and closing achievement gaps in 2010. Selected schools were honored as part of the Palmetto Gold and Palmetto Silver awards program to honor schools with high levels of absolute performance, high rates of growth and substantial progress in closing achievement gaps between groups of students. In its 10th year of operation, the program includes two parts -- recognition for general school performance as well as progress in closing achievement gaps between groups of students.
