DHEC details bat complaint, actions at KershawHealth
Documents show bats first noticed on Dec. 5
Just as the Chronicle-Independent hit its deadline for Friday’s edition on Thursday afternoon, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) provided copies of a complaint form and a Freedom of Information report concerning a bat infestation at KershawHealth. In a Dec. 21 statement published Friday, KershawHealth spokesman Johnny Deal said that while bats getting into buildings and homes in Camden is not unusual, it did pose “unique challenges” for the hospital. On behalf of administrators at KershawHealth and its new parent company, LifePoint Health, Deal said the hospital staff responded “immediately” upon detecting the bats to ensure proper precautions were taken.
