Bethune police chief vote may violate nepotism law

While the official minutes of a special August 27 meeting of Bethune Town Council tell a somewhat different story than originally told to the Chronicle-Independent, council’s vote to hire Mayor Carlisle Davis’ son, Glenn, as police chief may still violate state anti-nepotism laws. Wednesday’s edition of the C-I attributed to Town Clerk Gayle Rogerson, on the record, a statement that council voted to hire its new police chief in executive session. When asked for a copy of the minutes on Tuesday, Rogerson said they were not yet prepared, but that the vote for the police chief would not be in them anyway because it took place in executive session.
